Due to the heterogeneity observed within the Hungarian native donkey breed, it is necessary to establish a breeding stock that gathers the most outstanding individuals of the breed, thereby serving as a genetic reserve. This nucleus herd would play a key role in supplying breeding animals to donkey breeders. The Hungarian Native Donkey Pilot Program, aimed at achieving this goal, is coordinated by the Livestock Gene Conservation Institute of the National Centre for Biodiversity and Gene Conservation and is implemented by Kaposvár University, which maintains the largest Hungarian native donkey population in the country.
