Putting the Spotlight on Mediterranean Angelsharks

Today, more than 20 collaborating partners including the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) have launched the Mediterranean Angel Sharks: Regional Action Plan. It provides a framework for conservation action for Angelsharks in the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean is a hotspot of extinction risk for chondricthyans (sharks, skates, rays and chimaeras), making it a priority region for conservation action. Of the 73 species of Mediterranean chondrichthyans assessed by IUCN, 50 per cent of rays and 54 per cent of sharks face an elevated risk of extinction, with Angelsharks an example of one of the families where all species present in the region are threatened.

Migratory Species Banners on Display Outside UN Premises in Bonn

A total of nine large street banners featuring well-known migratory species such as the African Elephant, Whale Shark, Leopard and Monarch Butterfly are currently on display outside the UN Premises in Bonn, Germany. The banners mark the 40th Anniversary of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and show a small selection of migratory species protected under the Convention, which is also the oldest UN Organization in Bonn.

CMS Scientific Council Charts the Course for COP13

The Republic of the Maldives has acceded to the Convention becoming the 130th Party overall and the 19th from the Asia region. The Maldives’ accession takes effect today.
The Maldives is an archipelago of 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean approximately 1,000 km south of continental Asia, with a land area of just under 300 km2 and a population of 400,000 making it one of the dozen most densely populated countries in the world.
