Due to the ongoing situation following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus 2019, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in consultation with the Government of the People's Republic of China, the COP (Conference of the Parties) Presidency and the Co-Chairs of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (WG2020-2), has decided that the second meeting of the Working Group will take place in Rome, Italy at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on the same dates, 24 - 29 February 2020.

Twenty years ago, on 29 January 2000, Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The Cartagena Protocol entered into force on 11 September 2003.

Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, CBD Acting Executive Secretary, welcomes announcement that biodiversity will be theme of the next year's World Environment Day: "We are delighted to see that biodiversity will be the focus of World Environment Day 2020. The 2020 WED theme is especially opportune and will help educate the public and mobilize political will around one of the most critical issues of our time. UNEP's decision will help raise awareness of actions needed in the "super year" for biodiversity.

Agriculture and biodiversity have been inextricably linked for as long as we humans have been producing our own food. As the source of all variety in our crops and livestock, biodiversity is the very foundation of agriculture.

The Convention on Biological Diversity's (CBD) subsidiary body on science suggested elements of the science base that will be used at next year's biennial UN Biodiversity Conference in Kunming, China that will include discussions on an ambitious, transformative and effective post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
