We, the Heads of State/Government of Brunei Darussalam, the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Republic of Indonesia, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, the Republic of the Philippines, the Republic of Singapore, the Kingdom of Thailand and the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, Member States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), on the occasion of the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits in Vientiane, Lao People's Democratic Republic, on 6 September 2016.

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biodiversity (SCBD) and WWF International have signed an MoU to collaborate in implementing CBD's Global Communications Strategy together with CBD Parties, partners and the broader conservation community to achieve Aichi Biodiversity Target 1 (ABT1) by 2020.

The CHM Awards winners were announced at the CHM Award Ceremony held on 9 December 2016 at the margins of COP 13. In the "Existing National CHM" category, Mexico won the Gold Award, Australia the Silver Award, and Belgium the Bronze Award. In the "New National CHM" category, Malaysia won the Gold Award, Guatemala the Silver Award, and Kenya the Bronze Awards. In addition, 14 Parties were delivered Certificates of Achievements for the progress made in the establishment or further development of their National CHMs.

We, legislators gathered together on the occasion of the CBD COP13 Legislators Forum at the United Nations Biodiversity Conference, Cancun, Mexico, 2016, on 7 December 2016, have discussed practical strategies and success stories in promoting the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and Aichi Targets through focussed legislative leadership.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), today released a technical document that provides guidance on mainstreaming ecosystem services and biodiversity into agricultural production and management in the Pacific Islands.

I am pleased to welcome you all to the thirteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, the eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties, serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol, and the second meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol, here in Cancun, Mexico.
