In the lead-up to the forthcoming 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP14), the Government of Uzbekistan and the CMS Secretariat are pleased to unveil the conference's official logo and slogan. The UN wildlife conservation conference is set to take place in the historic city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 12 to 17 February 2024.

I am pleased to provide Parties, non-Parties, and observers with an update regarding CMS COP14, to be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

UN-led Task Force Issues Guidance on Addressing Unprecedented Outbreaks of Avian Influenza in Wildlife

The Scientific Task Force on Avian Influenza and Wild Birds – co-convened by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) – has sounded the alarm on the current near-global spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and the unparalleled scale of mortality among wild birds. Among other recommendations, the Task Force urges countries to consider HPAI as a conservation issue, plan accordingly and avoid culling measures of wild birds. It also calls for a ‘One Health’ approach to ensure appropriate cross-sectoral attention to human, animal and environmental health.

Meeting of all African Range States Results in Agreement on Key Priorities for Iconic African Carnivore Species

African Range States of the African Lion (Panthera leo), Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), Leopard (Panthera pardus) and African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus) met from 1 – 4 May in Uganda and agreed on a set of key priorities for the urgent conservation and sustainable management of these four carnivore species. The meeting was convened jointly by the Secretariats of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) under the African Carnivores Initiative (ACI).

On this year’s World Sea Turtle Day, the CMS Secretariat is pleased to launch a new report on the Hawksbill Turtle.  The Assessment of the Conservation Status of the Hawksbill Turtle in the Western Pacific Ocean Region presents a synopsis of what is known about hawksbill turtles in the Western Pacific Ocean, including knowledge of nesting and foraging populations and legislative and protection measures across signatory states.
