The Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is pleased to announce that:

Abu Dhabi, 13 March 2017 – Delegates from twenty-three countries, along with the world’s leading dugong and seagrass experts, gather today under the auspices of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) for the opening of the Third Meeting of Signatories (MOS3) to Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation and Management of Dugongs and their Habitats (Dugong MOU).

Dr. Thani Ahmed Al Zeyoudiis, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and Dr. Bradnee Chambers, Executive Secretary of CMS, collaborated on an Op-Ed highlighting the need for seagrass conservation and its impact on marine life around the globe.

The ASCOBANS Secretariat acts as the coordinating body of the Agreement. It evolved from humble beginnings in Cambridge, UK, has moved location a number of times and is today located in Bonn, Germany.

Lebanon is a country of extraordinary importance for migratory birds since it lies at the heart of the Rift Valley-Red Sea Flyway on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea. Every year thousands of birds migrate across Lebanon during the autumn season towards their wintering grounds in Africa and return in the spring time to their breeding areas in Eurasia. These birds are mainly waterbirds, raptors and songbirds. Among them there are several globally threatened species such as the Dalmatian Pelican, Greater Spotted Eagle, Imperial Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, Pallid Harrier and Lesser Kestrel. Great numbers of White Storks and Lesser-spotted Eagles also overfly Lebanon during their migration.

The Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species is pleased to announce the release of the third draft of the Indicator Factsheets for the Strategic Plan for Migratory Species 2015-2023.

Two important avian-related meetings took place back to back in Toledo, Spain, in February 2017: the OverarchingWorkshop to develop a Multi-species Action Plan to Conserve African-Eurasian Vultures (Vulture MsAP)and the 2nd Meeting of the Preventing Poisoning of Migratory Birds Working Group (PPWG). Both meetings were organized by the Spanish Ornithological Society (SEO), the BirdLife International partner organization in Spain, and generously supported by the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha.

Every 3 March World Wildlife Day is celebrated around the globe to commemorate the day on which CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) was signed. World Wildlife Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of conserving the planet’s animals. This will be the fourth year that this day is celebrated and it is hoped that with the support of international community it will continue to grow. It is vitally important to protect wildlife from the dire consequences of climate change, pollution, habitat loss, illegal trade, and poaching.
